Mercer Continues Homestand With Alabama State

MACON – After coming off a three-game sweep of Towson, the Mercer Bears (28-12, 4-5 SoCon) continue their eight-game homestand with a midweek matchup with Alabama State (20-18, 10-8 SWAC) at OrthoGeorgia Park on Tuesday night.

Notables:

The Bears snapped their four-game skid after a career-best outing by Garrett Lambert this past Friday. Lambert threw six shutout innings and only allowed two hits while tying his career high of nine strikeouts. The Southern Conference announced that Lambert's outing earned him SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors this Monday.
Both Titan Kamaka and Chris Katz impressed in the batter's box and were key pieces to Mercer going 3-1 last week. Kamaka hit .643 (9-for-14) with a double, three RBI, five walks and mashed a go-ahead home run in the Bears' series finale against Towson. Katz hit at a .412 clip with an 1.465 OPS across four starts. The senior outfielder blasted three home runs, including a walk-off home run this past Saturday, racked up six RBI, five runs and three walks.

Scouting the Hornets:

Alabama State comes into this midweek as winners of seven of its last ten games. The Hornets are 2-6 in midweeks this season with wins over Georgia State and South Alabama.
Miguel Oropeza leads Alabama State's offense with a .367 average, 1.024 OPS, 54 hits, 13 doubles and 84 total bases. The infielder from Aragua, Venezuela, has mashed five home runs and racked up 37 RBI across 38 starts.
Camden Matthews leads the Hornets' pitching staff as their top reliever. The graduate senior has a team-leading 3.59 ERA across 42.2 innings and 15 appearances. Matthews has a 39 to 14 strikeout-to-walk ratio and has only allowed a .265 batting average to opposing hitters.
