MACON – A pair of big blasts by Ethan Buffone and Chris Katz fused with a dominant outing by Miguel Hugas to deliver a 5-1 win for the Mercer Bears (31-12, 6-5 SoCon) over the Wofford Terriers (30-13, 8-3 SoCon) on Saturday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Decisive Plays:
Wofford capitalized on a Mercer error in the top of the second and grabbed the first lead of the game with an RBI double by Tanner Hardin. Ethan Buffone responded in the bottom of the third inning by launching his first collegiate home run to tie the game. Dylan LaPointe delivered the Bears' first lead of the game with an RBI triple in the home half of the fourth. Chris Katz extended Mercer's lead a few batters later with a three-run home run (14). Miguel Hugas stifled the Terriers and only allowed two baserunners the remainder of his outing. Jackson Gaspard entered the game to start the eighth for Hugas and retired the side in order. Wofford threatened late with two runners in scoring position in the top of the ninth, however, Gaspard dialed up a double play that shut down all of the Terriers' momentum and struck out the final batter to cap off the 5-1 win.
