Bears Return To South Carolina For SoCon Championship

MACON – After an incredible regular season, the Mercer men's golf team prepares to travel to Columbia, South Carolina, for the Southern Conference Championship tournament at Solina Golf Club this week.

The SoCon Championship caps off a 2025-26 season that consisted of ten events. This three-day event is the second time the Bears will compete at the Solina Golf Club in West Columbia, South Carolina. The last time Mercer competed at the prestigious venue was the inaugural Bryan Brothers Collegiate back in September.

Mercer saw a variety of success and displayed plenty of improvement from a year ago. The Bears began the season ranked No. 190 in the Scoreboard Rankings and finished the regular season ranked No. 150. The Bears also shaved nearly five strokes off their stroke average from a year ago. Last season, Mercer posted a 292.24 scoring average and maintained a 287.52 stroke average during the 2025-26 regular season. In the spring, the Bears turned in three consecutive Top Five finishes at the Wexford Intercollegiate, Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate and the Southern Intercollegiate.

Individually, Henry Robards leads the Bears with a 71.26 stroke average. The sophomore from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, ended the regular season with the third-lowest scoring average amongst all SoCon competitors. Robards finished last season with the 25th-best stroke average (73.69).

Josemaria Gutierrez has been on a tear since making his Mercer debut at the Palmetto Intercollegiate this spring. The senior transfer is seventh in the conference, and second on the team, with a 71.67 stroke average. Gutierrez ended two of his four tournaments with scores of four under par and notched a fourth-place finish under his belt at the Palmetto.
