Mercer Drops Season Opener To Florida Atlantic

MACON – The Mercer Bears (0-1) fell in their season opener to Florida Atlantic (1-0), 3-0, at Betts Stadium on Thursday night.
FAU found two goals early in the opening half. Mercer responded with a relentless attack and outshot the Owls 9-4 heading into the break. Despite Henry Hampshaw's three saves in the second half, FAU found its third goal of the night in the 74th minute to cap off the night's scoring.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a back-and-forth battle over possession between the two squads, FAU finished its first scoring opportunity of the night with Michel Tentchou finding the back of the net from just outside the six-yard box in the 10th minute. 10 minutes later, Xavi Csato fired his first goal as an Owl into the top-right corner to double FAU's lead.
The Bears made four substitutions, and the fresh legs of Colton Ellison, Ehi Aimiuwu, Anthony Herrera and Tolu Adeyemi led to Mercer firing off nine unanswered shots to end the half.
Out of the break, Aimiuwu recorded the Bears' first shot on goal of the night, forcing Alfred Mikkelsen to make his first save of the season in the 56th minute. At the 63:24 mark, DJ Koulai fired a shot towards the top left corner of the goal before Hampshaw stretched out and deflected the effort wide for the first save of his senior campaign.
In the 73rd minute, AJ Pama fired Mercer's second shot on goal of the night, but the Owls capitalized 40 seconds later with David Jesus scoring FAU's third and final goal of the contest. Mitchell Rogers attempted to find his first goal as an Owl, but Hampshaw leaped into the air and parried his shot wide to keep FAU off the board for the remainder of the contest.
