A 13-year coaching veteran, including previous stops at four other collegiate institutions, Blessing Freeman begins her first year at Mercer in 2024-25 as an assistant coach for the Bears. Freeman joined the coaching staff in Macon in April 2024 after spending the previous two seasons in a similar role at Robert Morris
Robert Morris boasted one of the nation’s top defensive teams amid Freeman’s first season in Pittsburgh, including NCAA Division I’s third-best perimeter defense (.250) and the nation’s 51st-best turnover margin (+3.3). Freeman was also instrumental in a heap of academic success by the squad as RMU posted NCAA Division I’s highest team grade point average (3.807) on the way to earning the top spot in the 2022-23 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll.
Prior to her move to Pennsylvania, Freeman left footprints of success at the prep level in Florida. She helped establish the girls’ basketball program at Legacy Charter High School in Ocoee, Fla., in 2015, leading the Eagles to 40 wins across four seasons (2015-19), including a pair of district runner-up finishes, before taking the reins of the program at Central Florida Christian Academy in time for the 2020-21 campaign. While in Orlando, she paced the Eagles to a 36-10 clip across two seasons (2020-22) and mentored a trio of all-district and all-county standouts.
Freeman dove into the coaching world in 2007-08 as an assistant coach at East Central Community College in Decatur, Miss., and enjoyed a stint as the director of women’s basketball operations at Rice during the 2011-12 season. She also served two seasons (2012-14) as an assistant coach at Delta State where she helped lead the Lady Statesmen to a 45-16 mark and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.
A native of Harvey, La., Freeman (then Blessing Chekwa) played in 107 games and was a two-time captain and defensive most valuable player for Mississippi State from 2002-06. While in Starkville, the Bulldogs racked up 61 wins and a pair of postseason appearances, including a trip to the 2002-03 NCAA Tournament. MSU also earned a berth into the 2004-05 WNIT event.
Freeman earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Mississippi State in 2006, and completed her graduate studies at MSU in 2011 with master’s degrees in both sports administration and public policy administration. She was wed to former Ole Miss football player Terry Freeman in June 2015.
