Idle Hour Golf Club
Idle Hour Golf Club serves as the Mercer women's golf team's primary practice facility. One of the most prestigious golf clubs in the state of Georgia, Idle Hour was established in 1912, making it one of the state's oldest and most prestigious clubs. It is comprised of beautifully manicured Georgia landscape interspersed with Bent grass greens and Bermuda fairways.
The property where the club now stands was a stock farm owned by R.H. Plant, whose interest was in raising trotters, not hitting a golf ball. He had one of the finest one-mile dirt tracks south of Louisville, Ky. Plant named his stock farm Idle Hour because he spent so many “idle hours” there. The remains of the track are still visible on the golf course today. Traces can be seen along the right of number six, in the fairway of number eleven and along the green through the woods along the rough on number 9.
Idle Hour Club has hosted a total of eight Georgia State Amateur Golf Championships. The first was in 1923 when East Lake's Watts Gunn defeated Charles Black 1-up. The most recent Georgia State Amateur Championship held at Idle Hour Club was in 2014 and was won by Robert Mize of Columbus with a score of 275 (-5 under par).
Idle Hour has served as the host site for Mercer's Idle Hour Collegiate Championship since 2016. The Bears have won each of the first two Idle Hour Collegiate Championships, both held at the end of October 2016 & 2017.
The 18-hole golf course is 6,006 yards of challenging play, equating to a par-72 layout. Idle Hour has a state-of-the-art Learning Center with a large driving range. A six-hole Par-3 golf course is located at the Learning Center.
