Alec Tocco Joins Men’s Lacrosse Staff As Defensive Coordinator

MACON – First-year head coach James Chakey continued to add to the foundation of the Mercer men's lacrosse coaching staff on Thursday afternoon when he announced the addition of six-year coaching veteran Alec Tocco as the defensive coordinator for the Bears.
Tocco spent the previous four seasons (2022-26) as the director of lacrosse operations at Brown, including each of the last two years alongside Chakey who was serving a stint as assistant coach for the Bears.
While handling the bulk of the day-to-day operations efforts, including travel needs, video and game film coordination and external communications, Tocco also worked closely with the faceoff specialists, wing players and goalie units at Brown. He helped lead Brown to a 3-game turnaround across his final two seasons in Rhode Island, including a 2026 campaign that was highlighted by the program's ninth Ocean State title after the Bears dominated matchups with in-state foes Providence and Bryant.
Player development was a staple for Tocco as well as he mentored two-time All-Ivy selection and Academic All-American Matt Gunty who finished seventh in the nation as a senior with a .631 faceoff percentage. He also served as a key coaching resource for Connor Foley who registered 286 saves and a 53.7 percent save percentage in just two seasons with the Bears.
Prior to trekking to the Ocean State, Tocco spent two seasons (2021-22) on the sidelines at Mount Saint Mary College where he served as the defensive coordinator for the Knights. Mount Saint Mary navigated a 5-1/2 game turnaround across Tocco's two seasons in Newburgh, N.Y., with the program boasting an all-American and a trio of all-conference standouts across that span as well.
Concurrent with his time at Mount Saint Mary, he also served as the director of the Ridge Lacrosse Club in nearby Stone Ridge, N.Y., where he mentored a roster of more than 70 players, while also managing practice plans, promotions, administration and management.
Tocco was an elite defender at Plattsburgh State from 2016-20, playing in 43 games (14 starts), while also tallying 26 groundballs and 18 caused turnovers. He helped pace the Cardinals to 34 dozen wins across five seasons, including a 2017 campaign that saw Plattsburgh State capture the SUNYAC Championship and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament. He set up a noteworthy collegiate career by earning a pair of all-American laurels and three all-section awards as a prep standout at Rondout High School.
A native of Kerhonkson in southeast New York, Tocco graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in video production from SUNY Plattsburgh in 2019 and completed his master's degree in student affairs and higher education from the distinguished institution in 2020.
