Olivia Bori scored two goals to lead Mercer offensively

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Olivia Bori scored twice and the Bears' defense stood tall all game as the Mercer women's soccer team shutout Winthrop, 4-0 Thursday night from Eagle stadium in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

It is the third shutout of the season for the Bears (4-3-0) who improve to 3-1-0 on the road this year. Mercer played 27 players on a hot and humid night.

Mercer outshot Winthrop, 23-4, including 13-1 in shots on goal. Shots in the first half were 16-1, but the Bears were only able to find the back of the net once in the opening 45 minutes, although they hit the post twice in the first half. Avery Parker got the start in goal for the Bears and made one save, before freshman Valentina Ronga made her second career appearance and played 24 minutes while preserving the shutout.

The Bears opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Anna Bachman raced down the right wing to the ball, took a few touches and took a shot that curled over the Winthrop goalie's outstretched hands and found the side netting far post. It was Bachman's first goal of the season and third of her career.

Mercer created numerous quality scoring opportunities in the first half. Marianna Rapani hit the crossbar just a few minutes in, Payton Nutzman hit the post from inside the box just before halftime, but the score remained 1-0 at halftime.

It didn't take the Bears long to add to their lead in the second half. In the 54th minute, Olivia Bori hit a bouncing ball down the left wing that hit off the bottom of the crossbar and went to give Mercer a 2-0 lead. Jut two minutes later, Bori took a right-footed shot that beat the diving Winthrop goalkeeper and find the right side of the goal for her second goal of the game and sixth of the season.

The Bears added on in the 64th minute when freshman Zibby Michaelson found a loose ball in the box and took a shot with her first touch for her fourth goal of the season as Mercer led, 4-0.

Mercer held Winthrop without any quality scoring chances the remainder of the game and came away with a 4-0 win.
