MACON, Ga. – After finishing out the 2011 Atlantic Sun Championship at 2-2, two Mercer softball players were named to the Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team for their superb play in the tournament.
Junior first baseman Kassie Bailey and senior pitcher Jenni Holtz led the team from the plate and inside the circle respectively this past week and put up some remarkable numbers.
The Bears were eliminated from the conference tournament on Friday after losing to Campbell, a team the Bears had beat in the opening game of the tournament, 3-0.
Bailey led Mercer with five total hits in 13 at bats during the tournament, an average of .385. The junior college transfer has had a terrific second half of the season as well as she posted 24 hits, two home runs, and 11 RBI in her last 24 games, including the tournament.
Holtz, who finished up her illustrious career just 40 strikeouts shy of 1,000, proved why she will go down as one of the best in A-Sun history this past week. In four appearances in the tournament, Holtz finished with a 2-0 record, a 1.07 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 19.2 innings pitched.
In the three A-Sun tournaments Holtz has appeared in she is 5-4 overall with four complete games, 64 strikeouts, a 0.90 ERA, and held opponents to a staggering .175 batting average.
