MACON, Ga. – Mercer senior Amiee Frutchey spiked 11 kills and tallied seven digs to lead the Mercer volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-18) victory over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon. The match was held at the University Center and marked the final game of the 2011 Bear Brawl.
"I'm happy for the girls to get their first win out of the way," head coach Noelle Rooke said. "We still have a long road ahead of us and a lot of work to do."
Mercer senior Anna Coursey collected Bear Brawl All-tournament honors after racking up 18 kills and nine total blocks in three matches. On Saturday, Coursey pounded out five kills on 15 attempts with a pair of block assists and block solos.
"I'm extremely proud of Anna's steady court play and how she did her job consistently all weekend long," Rooke said. "She deserved and earned a spot on the all tournament team."
Mercer's victory moved the team to 1-6 on the season while Norfolk State remained winless at 0-5.
Mercer setters Madeline Dolny and Monica Sanchez combined to hand out 33 assists against Norfolk State, helping the Bears achieve a season-high .227 hitting percentage in the match.
Junior Jamie Duffy tallied a match-high 17 digs in the win while also contributing six kills, two assists and a service ace.
The Bears out-blocked the Spartans 7-5, marking the second-straight match Mercer has held an edge in blocking.
In the first set, the teams split the first 30 points before Frutchey spiked a kill that gave Mercer a 16-15 edge. Mercer would not surrender the lead for the remainder of the stanza.
After the first set, which featured 10 tie scores and three lead changes, the match was a one-sided affair as Mercer trailed only twice the remainder of the contest.
Juniors Charlayna Braxton and Jennifer Katona each posted seven kills in the win. The junior duo also combined to contribute five block-assists in the winning effort.
Mercer returns to action at the Georgia Tech Regency Suites Invitational on September 10. At the tournament, Mercer is scheduled to face Samford, Georgia Tech and Georgia.
