Women's Golf Tied for Fourth at Lady Paladin Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mercer junior Mary Alice Murphy carded a 2-over 74 on the opening day of the Lady Paladin Invitational to lead the Bears to a tie for fourth place on the team leaderboard. Mercer's day one total of 307 outpaced nine other teams in Thursday's opening round.
Division II member Nova Southeastern leads the event with a team total of 297 while Furman (302) and Chattanooga (305) are second and third, respectively. Mercer's 307 equaled the effort from Samford and places the Bears five shots clear of Jacksonville and William and Mary.
"The course was there for the taking today," head coach Gary Guyer said. "We hit lots of greens and only had four birdies as a team. You won't win golf tournaments playing like that."
Murphy's 74 positions her in a four-way tie for third place overall. Senior Aurelie Wiriath used 76 strokes and is tied for 12th place. Junior Lacey Fears signed for 78 and is tied for 27th. Sophomore Sarah Louie Brown came in at 79 and is tied for 35th, while senior Kaitlin Marrin rounded out Mercer's competitors with an 82 and is tied for 58th place.
"Once this team differentiates between playing well and scoring well, then we can dominate," Guyer said. "Right now we seem to be trying for the perfect swing instead of the perfect target."
The second round of the Lady Paladin Invitational begins Friday at 9 a.m.
