MACON, Ga. – The Mercer softball team finished its 2012 fall season with a bang, sweeping all four games it played against Augusta State, Georgia College and East Georgia this past weekend at Sikes Field.
Mercer concludes its fall season with a 7-1 overall record thanks in large part to a revamped offensive attack that scored 8.5 runs per game thanks to a robust .418 team batting average.
The Bears started the weekend with a doubleheader sweep of Augusta State on Saturday. Mercer won game one 3-2, thanks to a game-winning RBI single by freshman Natalie Shriver, and coasted to a 16-5 victory in the nightcap.
The Orange and Black then welcomed Georgia College and East Georgia to Sikes Field for a game apiece on Sunday. Mercer beat Georgia College 5-1 in the opening game and captured a 10-3 win against East Georgia in its fall season finale.
The Bears pitching staff was led by junior Julia Rice with two wins while freshman Marissa Botz and senior Kerri Nidiffer each contributed quality starts in their outings.
Offensively, Mercer had several hitters shine over the weekend, including freshman Ashton Holt (.500 avg. and 6 RBI), junior Randi Rea (.500 avg. and 4 RBI) and junior McKenzie Woody (.430 avg. and 8 SB).
“Overall, the team played very well this weekend and I was very impressed by the quality of our at bats and the focus and intensity our team showed throughout,” head coach James DeFeo. “In the next few months we will be getting back many of our injured players and continue to focus on the process of fine tuning our skills both on offense and defense looking towards the spring season.”
