KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C.—The Mercer women's golf team is tied for 17th with an overall score of 625 through the first two rounds of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic. The Bears improved by five shots on the second day of competition, recording a second-round cumulative team score of 310.
Mercer's 625 has the team even with Georgetown on the team leaderboard. The Bears trail 16th place Longwood by only three strokes while Augusta State leads all teams at 582.
"We played better today, but so did most of the other teams," Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. "We had ideal conditions, but had difficulty taking advantage of it."
Headlining this weekend's proceedings for Mercer has been sophomore Lacey Fears, who finished Monday's action tied for seventh after shooting an even-par 72. On Sunday, Fears opened the tournament with a 2-over, 74 and was tied for 10th. Her second-round 72 came by virtue of 12 pars and three birdies.
"Lacey continued her stellar play and is in contention for the individual title," Guyer said.
Fears' two-round total of 146 has her three shots off the leader's pace and ahead of 172 other competitors.
Sophomore Mary Alice Murphy improved upon her first round total by one stroke, booking a 78 to slot her in a tie for 75th overall. Freshman Sarah Louise Brown shot her second-straight 79 at the event and is tied for 87th overall.
Junior Kaitlin Marrin used 84 strokes on Monday and is tied for 155th with a tournament total of 167. Her classmate Aurelie Wiriath is slotted in a tie for 161st after following Sunday's 88 with an 81.
The final round of the event is slated to get underway at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
