MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball team was not in sync all day long and once again fell victim to a hot Kennesaw State team in an 8-0 loss on Saturday afternoon at Claude Smith Field.
Mercer (13-7, 0-2 A-Sun) was shutout for the first time since UNF accomplished the feat in April of 2011, while Kennesaw State (11-8, 2-0 A-Sun) has now out-hit the Bears by a 30-6 margin over the first two games of the series.
Bears starter Brandon Barker was the tough luck loser in the contest, after allowing just one earned run on eight hits in 4.2 innings pitched.
The Orange and Black mustered just two hits in the contest and struck out a season-high 13 times against a quartet of Owls pitchers.
Kennesaw State started the scoring in the game by scoring runs in the second and third inning. An RBI single by senior Ronnie Freeman in the third put the visitors up by a 2-0 margin.
The Owls kept adding on with a run in the sixth, three tallies in the eighth and two more runs in the ninth to conclude the scoring in the contest.
KSU starter Steve Janas went 7.0 innings and allowed just one hit while striking out nine to pick up his first win of the season.
Mercer wraps up its three-game series against Kennesaw State tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Claude Smith Field.
