CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. – The Mercer women's golf team completed Saturday's second round of the University of Cincinnati Invitational with a score of 319, slipping to sixth place on the team leaderboard. Sophomore Mary Alice Murphy's 5-over 77 marked the team's low round of the day.
"We gagged today and it was painful to watch," Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. "We threw away shots all day long. It was our highest score of the year and honestly, it was a little embarrassing."
Mercer's 319 came on the heels of a 303 in the opening round and has the Bears six strokes off Morehead State's pace for fifth place. Florida International (584) leads the tournament while Stetson (605) and Xavier (609) round out the top three.
Murphy's 36-hole total of 151 slots her in a tie for 14th place overall. Junior Aurelie Wiriath followed Friday's 73 with an 83 and is tied for 32nd.
Freshman Sara Louie Brown needed 80 strokes on Saturday and is tied for 37th with a two-round score of 157. Sophomore Lacey Fears improved upon her round one score by three strokes, firing a 79 to move into a tie for 57th place.
Junior Kaitlin Marrin signed for an 85, bringing her tournament score to 164 and tying her for 69th overall.
"Conditions were tougher today but excuses are for losers," Guyer said. "Winners find a way to win and we have to reach down deep and see what we are made of."
The final round of the UC Invitational begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday.
