NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Mercer baseball team's mid-season swoon continued with an 11-3 defeat to Lipscomb on Saturday evening at Ken Dugan Field.
Mercer (16-9, 1-4 A-Sun) was held to just five hits in the ballgame and has now lost two-straight to Lipscomb (9-14, 2-3 A-Sun) for the first time since 2009.
The 11 runs allowed by the Bears pitching staff on Saturday is the most since Georgia State scored 14 runs against the Orange and Black in February of 2011.
The Bison struck first in the bottom of the second off Mercer starter Brandon Love. An RBI double by junior Ricky Coleman gave the home team an early 1-0 lead.
Lipscomb added to its lead in the bottom of the third when an RBI single by junior Zach Lowery made the score 2-0.
Mercer rallied back in the top of the fourth, however, using a sacrifice fly from redshirt sophomore Austin Barrett to bring home sophomore Nate Moorhouse to make the score 2-1.
It would become a pitching duel from that point forward with Love and the combination of pitchers for Lipscomb matching zeros on the scoreboard.
Love ended up going 5.1 and allowed the two runs on six hits to go along with six strikeouts.
In the end it would not be enough; however, as the Bison scored another five runs in the bottom of the seventh and utilized a trio of relievers to limit the Bears offense the rest of the way.
Redshirt sophomore Nick Backlund was the only Mercer hitter with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a double and a single in the loss.
Mercer concludes its three-game series with Lipscomb tomorrow afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Ken Dugan Field.
