KENNESAW, Ga. – The Mercer baseball team committed numerous miscues in the field that led to five unearned runs in a 6-1 loss to Kennesaw State on Wednesday evening at Stillwell Stadium.
Mercer (23-16) just couldn't find its rhythm at the plate all night long tallying just four hits, its fewest since collecting just three base knocks against Kennesaw State (24-16) back on March 17.
After Kennesaw State got things started with a run on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first, junior Jamie McMillan sliced a solo home run, his fourth of the season, to left field in the top of the second to tie things up at 1-1.
The Owls pushed across another run against Bears starter Brandon Barker in the bottom of the second after an RBI single by senior Ethan Herron gave the home team a 2-1 lead.
Kennesaw State continued to add to its lead with a passed ball in the bottom of the fourth and a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth allowed a pair of runs to come home and make the score 4-1.
The defensive lapses continued for the Bears in the eighth when an error and a wild pitch allowed the Owls to plate two more runs and solidify the 6-1 final score.
Offensively, freshman Chesny Young had a triple and sophomore Nate Moorhouse collected a double in the losing effort.
Mercer returns to action on Friday night when it begins a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series at East Tennessee State. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Thomas Stadium.
