Bears Falters Again Late in 7-2 Loss at ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Mercer baseball team continued its road struggles with another tough 7-2 loss at East Tennessee State on Sunday afternoon at Thomas Stadium.
Mercer (24-18, 7-11 A-Sun) is now 10-12 on the road this season and have only won one weekend series away from Claude Smith Field in 2012.
For the third time in as many game this weekend, Mercer lit up the scoreboard first in the top of the second when a sacrifice fly by sophomore Nate Moorhouse put the Bears up 1-0.
ETSU came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame thanks to an RBI single by senior Skyler Barnett and an error that put the home team in front, 2-1.
The Bucs added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth when a suicide squeeze bunt by sophomore Corey McPherson scored a run to make the score 3-1.
ETSU dealt the Orange and Black a knockout punch in the bottom of the seventh when senior Dylan Pratt hit a grand slam to put the Bucs comfortably in front, 7-1.
Bears starter David Randall took the tough luck loss after allowing four earned runs on six hits in 6.1 innings pitched.
Junior Kerry Doane picked up the win for ETSU after throwing a complete game and allowing just two runs on six hits to go along with three strikeouts.
Mercer is back on the road when it travels to Montgomery to take on Alabama State on Tuesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
