SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Behind the strength of junior Mary Alice Murphy's 74 (+2) Monday, the Mercer women's golf team wrapped up competition in the opening round of the Terrier Intercollegiate in fourth place. Mercer's team score of 304 on Monday outpaced nine other teams at The Country Club of Spartanburg.
Mercer's 304 places the team just three strokes behind UNC-Pembroke entering Tuesday's final round. The Bears are four strokes ahead of fifth-place Elon, and only 10 strokes behind tournament leader Gardner-Webb.
"The team played okay today, especially for the first round of the year," Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. "We struck the ball well and just need to putt better. We hit a lot of greens in regulation and didn't take advantage of it."
Murphy's 74 placed her in a four-way tie for ninth overall after 18 holes of play. Gardner-Webb's Mary K. Donovan leads all individuals with an opening round 68.
Junior Lacey Fears and senior Kaitlin Marrin each turned in 76's, while senior Aurelie Wiriath carded a 78. Sophomore Sarah Louie Brown rounded out Mercer's team competitors eight a 79.
Fears and Marrin are tied for 17th overall, while Wiraith is tied for 28th on the leaderboard. Brown enters Tuesday's final 18 holes tied for 31st place overall.
Senior Jessica Arthur shot 80 while competing as an individual and is tied for 36th place.
"We are only 10 strokes back, and we have overcome that before," Guyer said.
Tuesday's final round of competition is scheduled to get underway with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
