Murphy Ties for Second at Terrier Intercollegiate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer junior Mary Alice Murphy turned in Tuesday's low round at The Country Club of Spartanburg, carding a 70 (-2) on her way to a second place individual finish in the Terrier Intercollegiate. As a team, the Bears' final round score of 301 slotted the squad fifth of 13 teams.
Mercer's two-day total of 605 was just one stroke behind host Wofford for fourth place and nine strokes ahead of Elon. UNC-Pembroke rallied to win the tournament with a team total of 294 on the final day, completing the event with a score of 595.
"We played better but came up a little bit short," Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. "It was a good first tournament, and we know the areas we need to focus on. One thing about this team is that they give you all they got."
Murphy's 70 combined with an opening round 74, tying her with Wofford's Anne Marie Covar for second place overall. Murphy's 144 was one stroke shy of individual medalist Mary K. Donovan of Gardner-Webb, who followed her Monday 68 with a 75.
"Mary Alice gave us a big lift today," Guyer said. "She is hitting the ball extremely well."
Her effort marked the seventh time in her career that she has notched a top-five finish and third time she has earned runner-up honors.
Junior Lacey Fears improved upon her Monday total by one stroke Tuesday, signing for a 75 and tying for 17th place overall. Senior Kaitlin Marrin and sophomore Sarah Louie Brown each posted 78's and tied for 21st place and 32nd place overall. Senior Aurelie Wiriath rounded out Mercer's team participants with an 82, placing in a tie for 46th individually.
Senior Jessica Arthur finished first among players competing as individuals on the strength of a final round 75. Her 75 paired with an opening round 80 and placed her tied for 25th overall.
The Bears return to competitive play hosting the Eat a Peach Collegiate on September 22 at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Jekyll Island, Georgia.
