CONWAY, Ark. – The Mercer men's soccer team's five-match unbeaten streak is no more after a 2-0 defeat at Central Arkansas on Saturday afternoon at the Bill Stephens Track/Soccer Complex.
Mercer (4-3-1) was shutout for the first time this season by Central Arkansas (6-1) after mustering a season-low eight shots on the day.
Central Arkansas jumped in front towards the end of the first half by simply being in the right place in the right time. After junior Shafial Mason fired a shot that was blocked by the Mercer defense, senior Ethan Miller picked up the deflection and slid the ball into the back of the net to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
The Bears put the match out of reach in the 76th minute when junior Alex Ghaffari fired a shot from 15 yards out past Mercer goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh to give Central Arkansas a 2-0 win.
Ranjitsingh made two saves in the loss while senior Cody Gibson made three saves to preserve the shutout win for Central Arkansas.
Mercer returns home for its next match when it welcomes UNC-Asheville to Macon on September 26. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Bear Field.
