DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Mercer freshman Katy Harris fired a 3-under 69 to spearhead the women's golf team's charge into first place in Monday's final round of the Xavier's LPGA Invitational. Harris' 69 helped the Bears shave four strokes off their round two total and move past Morehead State and Daytona State College on the leaderboard.
Mercer won the event with a three-day total of 893, while Daytona State and Morehead State ultimately tied for second at 901. Host Xavier (914) and Stetson (918) rounded out the top five.
Mercer's victory was its second of the season after capturing the Eat a Peach Collegiate title on September 8. The team's final round 292 on Monday was the lowest round total by any team in the tournament and bested Daytona State by eight strokes for the day's low round.
"This team really plays well together," Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. "To win college tournament you have to play as a team and this group comes together for each other."
Harris' 69 paired with scores of 77 and 75 to help her place fourth at 221. The effort was her second top-five in three collegiate tournaments. Mercer's top finisher was senior Lacey Fears, who collected scores of 72, 70 and 74 to take third at 216.
Senior Mary Alice Murphy tied for 13th overall with a 56-hole total of 227 (77-76-74). Junior Sarah Louie Brown came in a tie for 24th at 232 (79-78-75) while freshman Macy McRaney tied for 50th at 242 (79-75-88).
"Our goal is to get a little better every day and it was nice to see our score improve in each round," Guyer continued. "This team knows how to win and close the deal. We always finish strong."
Mercer concludes its fall schedule in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii. The three-day event will be contested at Leilehua Golf Course.
