
Bears Go 1-1 on Day One of FIU Classic

MIAMI, Fla. – The Mercer Bears went 1-1 on day one of the FIU Classic as game one saw the Mercer softball team emerge victorious against the Hartford Hawks 9-1, while game two saw Mercer fall to the Savannah State Tigers 6-2.
In game one, freshman Kaytlin Haney led the way hitting a perfect three-for-three on the day while scoring three runs.
Junior Krista Kennedy also went one-for-two on the day with 3 RBIs.
The first inning saw Mercer bust out the bats as they scored three runs. After singles by junior McKenzie Woody and freshman Kaytlin Haney, several errors saw both players advance from their initial positions. Woody was able to score on an error. A groundout by senior Sarah Santana was enough to get Haney across home plate.
Kennedy was also able to get in on the first inning action as she also scored a run due to several errors.
The second and third innings saw neither team put any runs on the board.
The fourth inning saw Mercer produce two more runs to go up 5-0. After freshman Ashton Holt was walked, sophomore Molly Garmany took her spot as a pinch-runner. Junior Randi Rea also advanced to first base on a walk. Both Garmany and Rea scored on the throw.
The fifth inning saw Hartford score one inning and Mercer score four to end the game in the fifth inning.
Junior transfer Julia Rice earned the win for the Bears only allowing three hits in the game.
Game two saw Mercer struggle on the offensive end of the ball.
Savannah State scored five runs and held the Bears scoreless in the first three innings.
The first inning saw Savannah State score one run while Mercer was held scoreless. Neither team scored runs in the second inning.
The third inning saw the Tigers pull out the offensive firepower as they scored four runs on the strength of a Torrian Wright homerun.
Mercer finally broke out the bats in the fourth inning scoring two runs and limiting Savannah State to one. Kaytlin Haney and senior Sarah Santana scored for the Bears.
That's all she wrote for the Bears as they did not score runs in the fifth through the seventh innings.
Mercer tries to get back to their winning ways on Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m. when they take on FIU.
