Bears Pick Up Clutch 4-3 Win Over FGCU

MACON, Ga. – It took over five hours to complete on a wet and soggy day on the courts, but the Mercer men's tennis team took a thrilling 4-3 win over Florida Gulf Coast on Friday at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
The Bears (3-10, 1-1 A-Sun) first conference win this season came down to the final singles match to finish as freshman Arsav Mohanty came through with his fifth win of the season in three sets to secure the win.
After dropping the first set 6-3 to FGCU's No. 5 singles player, Lance Lvovsky, Mohanty regrouped and was efficient in taking the second set 6-0.
With things tied up at one set a piece, Mohanty had to fight for a tough 6-4 win in the final set to secure the Bears' win.
Mercer was put into position to take the win after initially taking the doubles point with wins at both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Arsav and his twin brother Arnav got the Bears off to a good start taking the first win of the day at No. 2 doubles with a solid 8-2 win of the FGCU pair of Tianyu Bao and Dylan Gunning.
MU's No. 1 duo of Joao Pagan and Peter Tauchner then secured the point by taking down FGCU's No.1 Jordi Vives and Dean Tsamas, 8-5.
The Bears proceeded to lose the top three singles matches, but clutch wins by Mercer's Vincent DeLise at No. 4 singles and Anderson Scarpa at No. 5 singles knotted the match at three and setting the stage for Arsav's big victory.
The Bears return to action on Saturday hosting Stetson at 3 p.m. at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
