Bears Fall at Home vs. No. 74 ETSU

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's tennis team had a tough challenge on hand against No. 74 East Tennessee State on Friday afternoon as the Bears fell, 7-0 at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
Mercer (5-14, 2-5 A-Sun) had four of its six singles matches go to three sets, but couldn't come up with a win in any of them. Arnav Mohanty, Joao Pagan, Vincent DeLise and Arsav Mohanty each battled hard in their respective singles bouts, pushing ETSU to three sets.
After being swept in the doubles competition, the Bears looked to rely on a healthy lineup at singles to produce a couple of wins. Mercer's No. 2 singles Arnav Mohanty has settled into his position and played a gritty match against ETSU's Rogerio Ribero.
After dropping the first set, 6-2 Mohanty rebounded to take the second set 7-5. Ribero, bounced back in the third however, ending things with a decisive 6-1 score in the final set.
At No. 3 singles, MU's Joao Pagan had perhaps the closest match going to a first set tiebreaker, and winning the second set. Pagan lost the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5), but was able to even things up with a 6-4 win in the second. ETSU's Juan Ramirez buckled down in the third set to take the 6-0 victory.
Vincent DeLise and Arsav Mohanty both traded the first two sets in their matches at No. 4 and No. 6 singles respectively. However, they too couldn't hang on in the third set and the Bears were retired, 7-0 altogether.
The Bears return to the courts tomorrow in the final match of the regular season. The Bears are in need of a win against USC Upstate to keep their postseason hopes alive. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
