JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Junior Kaitlin Marrin fired an even-par 72 on the opening day of the Atlantic Sun Women's Golf Championship to help Mercer finish day one tied with Florida Gulf Coast for third place on the team leaderboard. The Bears' Monday score of 297 (+10) at the Pine Lakes Golf Course places the team 11 strokes off the pace of East Tennessee State for the tournament lead.
ETSU (287) finished the day one under par as a team and leads second placed Jacksonville by six stokes. Mercer's 298 positions the Bears one stroke ahead of Kennesaw State and two strokes up on North Florida.
"We got off to a slow start," Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. "It wasn't a bad day, but we're capable of so much better. We're just played average today. Tomorrow's another day, and the conditions have been perfect, so we'll go out and see who wants it the most. We've got the game to shoot under par, we've got to just go out and do it."
Marrin was one of seven players to shoot 72 or better on Monday and is five strokes behind ETSU's Sian Evans and Jacksonville's Jessica Welch for the individual lead. Marrin's even-par round was her second-best score of the season, bested only by her 71 (-1) on March 17 at the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational.
"I'm so proud of Kaitlin," Guyer said. "Her game has stepped up in the last year and now she's competing like the number one player on our team. She's got that look in her eye, where you can tell she's not going to be denied."
Mercer juniors Lacey Fears and Mary Alice Murphy each shot 75 on Monday and are tied for 13th place individually. Sophomore Sarah Louie Brown carded a 76 and is tied for 18th while senior Aurelie Wiriath used 79 strokes and is tied for 35th.
Tuesday's second round is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. with live scoring provided by www.GolfStat.com.
