Woody Picked to NFCA All-Region Team

NFCA ALL-REGION TEAMS

MACON, Ga. – Mercer junior McKenzie Woody led the country in hits for a majority of the year and after being named an Atlantic Sun First Team All-Conference selection last week she was selected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association South All-Region Second Team.

The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three 2013 NFCA Division I All-American teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration.

Woody finished the season with 80 hits, and for the second year in a row, set the single season all-time mark in that category at Mercer. She led the A-Sun with a career-high .437 batting average and was one of seven A-Sun players named to the South Region teams.

"The accolades just keep coming for McKenzie and she is certainly deserving of it," head coach James DeFeo said. "She has put in the hard work and is dedicated to raising not only her level of play, but of those around her as well."

Woody has had a remarkable career thus far for the Bears. She will likely break the program's all-time hit record early next season as she is just four hits shy (216) of the mark. She boasts a career .399 batting average and is just as adept at her position in centerfield. In three years in a starting role at the position she has just eight errors and an impressive .965 fielding percentage.

"McKenzie is a special student-athlete and we are very proud to have her representing the Mercer Softball program on a national stage," DeFeo said.
