JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Senior Lacey Fears carded a one-under 71 and Mercer posted Friday's top five individual scores as the Eat a Peach Collegiate got underway at Pines Lakes Golf Course. Mercer's day one total of 293 places the team 24 strokes ahead of the next closest competitor.
Seminole State finished at 317 and is second while Florida Gulf Coast (321) and USC Upstate (322) round out the four team field.
"We had a good first round,"Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. "I schedule this event so early in the season to see how hard the team worked over the summer. You can tell that they put forth the effort."
Already a two-time medalist in previous editions of the Eat a Peach, Fears is back in a familiar spot after carding four birdies in Friday's action. She's trailed closely by freshman Katy Harris , who shot an even-par 72 to wrap up the day in second.
Junior Sarah Louie Brown and freshman Haley Austin are tied for third place with one-over 73's while senior Mary Alice Murphy is tie for fifth at 76 (+4). Freshman Macy McRaney shot 78 in her collegiate debut while sophomore Meredith Owen and freshman Marin Marrin each shot 80.
"A score of 293 is good, but our goal is 288," Guyer said. "It will take 288's to get us to Tulsa."
The second round of the Eat a Peach Collegiate is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. start on Saturday.
