BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mercer women's soccer team wrapped up regular season play, falling to Samford, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears finished the regular season with an 11-5-2 overall record and a 6-1-2 mark in league play, earning the No. 3 seed in the Southern Conference tournament. Samford (12-7, 7-2 SoCon) finished first in the conference.
"We knew coming in today what was at stake and we told the team that we needed to play 90 minutes of our best soccer to beat a very good, talented Samford team at their place," said Head Coach Tony Economopoulos. "We came out flat in the first five minutes, unfortunately, and they got an opportunity and put it away, and that was the difference in the match. We made some adjustments at halftime, came out with a bit more energy in the second half, but we couldn't create enough good chances to get us on the board and tie up the match. I credit Samford for playing a very good game and eliminating our chances offensively."
The Bulldogs scored the only goal of the match in the fifth minute of the match when Amanda Abbott beat out Maggie Cropp and found the back of the net.
Mercer outshot Samford, 11-7, and won the corner kick battle, 4-1. Tess Patton led the Bears' offensive efforts with three shots, and Washida Blackman tallied two. In goal, Cropp made five saves.
Next up, No. 3 Mercer will host No. 6 Western Carolina in the quarterfinals of the SoCon Tournament. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2 at Bear Field.
