GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Mercer women's soccer team played to a draw against Furman in double overtime on Sunday at Stone Soccer Stadium.
"It was a fantastic game today with two very good teams fighting for a top spot in the Southern Conference," said Head Coach Tony Economopoulos. "It was a competitive, well-balanced game and I thought we did very well against the SoCon defending champions and the pre-season No. 1 team. We went toe-to-toe with them, competed and had some chances, but unfortunately, we didn't put them away. Overall, I'm glad we got four points this weekend and we still control our own destiny."
The Bears (7-4-2, 2-0-2 SoCon) outshot the Paladins 16-12, including 3-2 in the two overtime periods. However, Furman (7-3-2, 1-1-2 SoCon) led in corner kicks, 4-2.
Tess Patton led the offensive attack for Mercer with four shots, while Washida Blackman fired off three of her own. Lauren Gassie and Sarah Daane each added two shots, and Stephanie Giangiuli, Liz Hopkins and Katelyn Dimopoulos all tallied a shot.
In goal, Maggie Cropp played all 110 minutes and notched a season-high-tying seven saves. Cropp has now recorded three complete-game shutouts this season.
"We've had three straight shutouts now, and our defense is improving each game," continued Economopoulos. "This was their third consecutive game against a SoCon opponent that they haven't given up a goal – that's 290 minutes that we haven't conceded a goal."
Mercer will return to Bear Field on Friday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. to host East Tennessee State.
