MACON, Ga. – Mercer men's basketball's Jakob Gollon added another impressive achievement to his resume on Monday as the senior was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year in an announcement by the league office.
Gollon headlines the five-member Academic All-Atlantic Sun Conference team, marking the second-straight year the Stevens Point, Wisconsin native has landed a spot on the squad. As the top vote getter for the Academic All-Conference team, Gollon becomes the fourth Mercer student-athlete to earn the distinction since the conference began awarding the honor starting in 2011.
Gollon graduated with a Master's in Educational Leadership in December with a 3.916 GPA, having already completed undergraduate coursework for a Bachelor's degree in Communications with a 3.472 GPA.
This season, Gollon scored the 1,000th point of his career on Jan. 10 and scored 10 or more nine times, including a game-high 18 points in the A-Sun regular season championship clinching win over Jacksonville. The forward also set a personal single-game record with 37 points at Valparaiso on Nov. 29.
The honor is the second academic award of the year for Gollon, who was named a Capital One Academic District IV first team selection on Jan. 29. Prior to the season, Gollon was named one of 30 finalists for the coveted senior CLASS award.
Gollon is currently tied for seventh place in NCAA history with 149 games played and will likely finish as Mercer's career leader in free throw percentage, shooting 80.5% from the charity stripe throughout his career.
Other Mercer student-athletes to garner Scholar Athlete of the Year honors are men's soccer's Will Betts (2011, 2012), men's soccer's Joey Heaver (2013) and baseball's Brandon Barker (2013).
