MARIETTA, Ga. – Down 3-1 at one point in the match, the Mercer men's tennis team used some gritty singles play to come away with a 4-3 comeback win over Kennesaw State on Wednesday afternoon at Fair Oaks Park.
Mercer has now beaten Kennesaw State in four out of the last five meetings between the schools dating back to 2010 after dropping last season's match by a 4-3 margin.
"Even though we won the doubles point, we did a great job of fighting back when we were down in singles," assistant coach Tim McLane said. "Manuel did a great job fighting back from 2-4 down in the third set to win the match for us. Hopefully we can carry this momentum into the North Florida match on Saturday."
Mercer started the match on a positive note, using wins at No. 2 doubles by sophomores Arsav and Arnav Mohanty and No. 3 doubles by sophomore Anderson Scarpa and senior Joao Pagan to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.
After dropping the first three singles points, Mercer came roaring back starting with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles by Scarpa. Following Arsav Mohanty's 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 6 singles, freshman Manuel de Luis captured the match clinching point with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.
Mercer continues Atlantic Sun play this weekend when it hosts No. 71 North Florida on April 5 at 2 p.m. at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
