KENNESAW, Ga. – Having swept the doubleheader at home against them last week, the Mercer University softball team lost to Kennesaw State University at Bailey Park on Wednesday 5-4 to close out the series.
Mercer (29-14, 11-5 Atlantic Sun) and Kennesaw State (20-21, 9-9 A-Sun) traded blow after blow through the first five innings, until Kennesaw snuck one more run across the plate in the bottom of the fifth. Mercer was not able to match the one run in the final two frames.
After only recording three hits against her in a nine inning game last Wednesday, the Owls got to freshman Kirsten Stevens (11-4) as they tallied 10 hits. Stevens did strike five Owls out and only two of the five runs scored by them were earned.
Junior Kaylynn Sloat had a banner day as she attempted to will the team to a win. She went 3-for-4 with two two-out RBIs. Both sophomore Natalie Shiver and junior Riley Carter had doubles that came back-to-back in the fifth that for a brief moment gave the bears the lead.
Freshman Anna O'Neill enjoyed a nice relief appearance as she pitched the sixth inning allowing one hit while striking out two batters.
The Bears will look to right the ship on the road this weekend as they travel to Nashville to face Lipscomb. They will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. and then finish the series with a third game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
