ATLANTA, Ga. – The Mercer women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Georgia State on Friday night at the Georgia State Soccer Complex.
Mercer (4-4) had a couple of chances in each half, but was unable to convert any into goals. Brianna Stampler led the offensive attack for the Bears with four shots and Washida Blackman added two shots of her own, both on goal.
After a scoreless first stanza, Georgia State (2-4-3) scored the only goal of the match in the 57th minute when Ashley Nagy found the back of the net.
"It was a great game tonight with in-state rival, Georgia State," said Head Coach Tony Economopoulos. "I was very proud of our girls' effort tonight. We fought for 90 minutes, we scrapped, we possessed the ball well and we had 14 shots. We dominated statistically today; unfortunately for us, our case so far this season has been finding a way to put that ball in the back of the net. We're going to go back to work tomorrow morning and work on being more clinical in front of that goal. I feel that when we start to score some more goals, we're going to be a dangerous team.
"I give credit to our whole team today for working hard and keeping a very strong, physical team out of the goal for almost 60 minutes, continued Economopoulos. "Credit to Georgia State for a good win tonight. Our girls worked hard and they deserved better, but we'll come back on Sunday against USC-Aiken."
Mercer outshot Georgia State 14-10, and the Bears notched seven corner kicks, compared to the Panthers' one. In addition to the Mercer offense dominating statistically, the defense stepped up and kept Georgia State from getting too many chances at goal. Between the pipes, Maggie Cropp made three saves.
Next up, Mercer will host USC-Aiken on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. at Bear Field.
