STATESBORO, Ga. – The Mercer women's soccer team fell to Georgia Southern, 2-0, after a gritty battle on Friday night at Eagle Field.
"Overall I was very proud of the girls; they played a very good game," said Head Coach Tony Economopoulos. "They were physical tonight, we kept possession and overall they gave over 100 percent. We outshot them on shots, shots on goals and corner kicks, and we out-possessed them a majority of the match. Unfortunately, it's a game of chances; they had two chances and they put them away. We have to work on being more clinical in front of goal and putting our chances away."
Prior to the start of the match, there was a lightning delay for an hour and 15 minutes. However, once the match got started, it was physical from start to finish and included 36 fouls and six yellow cards.
The Bears (2-3) had several opportunities to score, but the nearest miss occurred when Washida Blackman hit the post in the 60th minute. The Eagles' (4-1) managed to find the back of the net with their first two shots on goal, both of which came from Jennifer Wittick.
"Our girls fought really hard and I feel like the first goal really changed the game," continued Economopoulos. "It was a penalty kick that we're still trying to figure out what happened, but that's the nature of the game."
Haleigh Svede led the attack for Mercer, firing off 3 shots, including two on goal. Four additional Bears recorded multiple shots, and Mercer led Georgia Southern 16-10 in shots.
Goalkeepers Maggie Cropp and Cristina Mursuli split time between the pipes and Mursuli made two saves in the second half. Georgia Southern's goalie, Katie Merson, made eight saves against the Bears.
Mercer returns to Macon to host Houston on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.
