
Men's Soccer Falls to Furman in Penalty Shootout

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The third-seeded Mercer University men's soccer team played No. 2 Furman to a scoreless draw in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament, sending the match to a penalty shootout. The Paladins won the shootout, 3-2, to advance in the tournament.
TURNING POINT
For the third time this season, Mercer and Furman played the match to a second overtime period. Twice, the Bears and the Paladins did not have a winner after 110 minutes, but this time it sent the game to a penalty shootout. Furman won the shootout, 3-2, to advance in the tournament.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Jeremy Booth made three saves and did not allow a goal in his 110 minutes in goal for the Bears.
STAT OF THE GAME
While Furman led Mercer 10-4 in shots, including a 3-0 shots on goal advantage, neither team netted a goal.
NOTABLES
- Ian Antley, Jake Mezei, Kobe Perez and Trenton Whitely each tallied a shot for Mercer.
- Furman also led in corner kicks, 6-2.
- Jeremy Booth made three saves for the Bears while notching his league-leading eighth clean sheet of the season.
- Mercer and Furman played three times this season, all of which required double overtime.
- Mercer also played to double overtime in its 2014 SoCon Tournament semifinal match, an eventual 1-0 victory over UNCG.
RECORDS UPDATE
The game is officially recorded as a tie, and Mercer finished the season at 11-6-3, while Furman moved to 7-5-5.
