MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team fell behind early and couldn't recover in a 15-8 non-conference loss to Siena at Mercer University Stadium on Tuesday. Freshman Matt Quinn and sophomore Chris Rahill each registered multi-goal performances.
The Bears slipped to 0-3 on the season while Sienna pulled even at 2-2 overall.
Siena scored just 39 seconds into the game and built a 5-0 lead by the early stages of the second period. Mercer junior Chris Baxa momentarily halted the run, scoring with an assist by sophomore James Tautkus at the 13:36 juncture of the period. The Saints continued to press, however, netting the game's next three scores to assume a commanding 8-1 lead.
Junior Ben LeSane sparked some momentum late in the first half, scoring the first of three unanswered Mercer tallies. The charge was capped by senior Justin Evans, who won a faceoff and streaked down the field for a goal just six seconds later to cut the deficit to four (8-4).
The buffer was still four in the third period when the Saints strung together three-straight goals to take a 13-6 lead. Both teams would add two more goals to account for the final margin.
Junior goalie Mike Nugent made eight saves in the losing effort, while Evans won 17-of-21 faceoffs taken. The Bears led ground balls 27-17 and were 14-of-15 on clear attempts.
Mercer hits the road to continue the non-conference portion of the schedule, playing against Detroit-Mercy on March 4. Game time is TBA.
