MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team and the Utah Utes put on an offensive clinic at Five Star Stadium on Saturday morning where Utah took down Mercer 24-14 in the second Atlantic Sun conference match up of the season.

Eight different Bears found the back of the net for Mercer, including a hat trick from senior midfielder Jack Sullivan. Dillon Bush, Ben Jose, Nick Church and Will Zylstra each contributed a pair of goals to the Mercer offense, respectively. For the first time in his career, junior midfielder Bennett Junod found the back of the net while Ganon Cope and Jonathon Benerofe each added a goal of their own. Michael Frederick tabbed four assists and three ground balls while Jacob Neuman and Jack Guido combined for 24 saves against the Utes.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mercer opened up scoring when Sullivan found the back of the net at the 13:45 mark off of an assist from Nick Church. The Utes went on to score five unanswered goals until Bush scored at the 7:14 mark off of an assist from Zylstra. Utah responded with another goal of their own and Church closed out scoring in the first quarter with 1:40 left on the clock.
Scoring did not slow down in the second quarter with both teams combining for nine goals before halftime, including back-to-back goals from Sullivan and Jose to put the Bears within four before the third quarter.
The Utes began to pull the game further out of reach at the beginning of the third quarter scoring three quick goals. Cope responded with his second goal of the day at the 12:11 mark but was followed up by two Utah goals. Zylstra, Church and Jose all found the back of the net again in the third quarter to add to Mercer's scoring.
Offense still would not let up for both sides in the fourth quarter with Mercer scoring three times and Utah scoring four. The Utes were able to stay enough out of reach from the Bears to advance their ASUN record to 2-0.

Sullivan recorded the first hat trick of his career.
Christopher Cappelmann reached a career milestone of 100 ground balls.
Junod scored his first career goal.

NOTABLES

Mercer moves to 5-5 on the season and 1-1 in the ASUN.
The Utes remain undefeated in the conference (2-0).
