CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Mercer University baseball team fell to The Citadel, 4-0, in the opening game of its Southern Conference series on Thursday night at Riley Park.
Mercer (18-13, 5-2 SoCon) struggled offensively, as Bulldogs' ace James Reeves tossed a complete game no-hitter while matching a season-high with 14 strikeouts. Jackson Ware paced the Bears' offense with two walks, while Matt Meeder added to his SoCon-leading total with his 25th base on balls this season.
The Citadel (15-13, 1-3 SoCon) scored what turned out to be the game's winning run in the bottom of the first inning on Stephen Windham's RBI double, before adding three insurance runs in the fourth frame. The Bulldogs put their first four batters of the inning on base and would push their lead to 4-0 after run-scoring hits from Jason Smith and William Kinney.
Mercer starter Eric Nyquist was charged with the loss, falling to 4-2 on the season after surrendering four runs on seven hits in six innings of action. Austin Lord and Carter Varga each tossed scoreless frames to close out the contest.
