RICHMOND, Va. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team saw its shot at a second-straight regular season league championship dashed on Saturday in a 10-5 loss to Richmond at Robins Stadium.
Mercer concluded the regular season at 5-7 (5-1 SoCon) and garnered the No. 2 seed for next weekend's Southern Conference Tournament. Richmond (10-4, 6-0 SoCon) claimed the SoCon Regular Season Championship and will host the aforementioned SoCon Tournament.
Five different Mercer players scored a goal in the game as the Bears put 16 shots on cage.
The scoreboard reflected a 1-1 tie nearly 10 minutes into the game before the Spiders began a stretch of seven-unanswered goals. The streak featured three goals by sophomore Mickey Hofmeister and left the Bears trailing 8-1 at halftime.
Rahill broke the scoring drought out of halftime, receiving a pass from junior Chris Baxa en route to the first goal of the second half. The Spiders continued to press, however, scoring the game's next two goals to earn a 10-2 lead entering the final period.
Although the gap was too large, Mercer finished strong by outscoring Richmond 3-0 in the final quarter. Ensor's man-down tally concluded the game's scoring and marked just the second man-down goal in Mercer lacrosse history.
Mercer opens the SoCon Tournament on April 30 against third-seeded High Point. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.
