Mercer Falters on Road at ETSU, 2-0
10/1/2016 9:39:00 PM | Men's Soccer
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – After firing 14 shots in the first half, it appeared as if it would only be a matter of time before Mercer found the net against East Tennessee State on Saturday night. The Bears never did though, resulting in a 2-0 loss to ETSU in a Southern Conference men's soccer match at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
It was the Bears' first SoCon loss of the year, dropping them to 6-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play. Despite allowing 15 total shots to Mercer, ETSU (5-3-1, 0-1-1) has now held opponents scoreless in the last 609 regulation minutes played.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Although the teams entered halftime in a scoreless draw, it was all Bears in the first half as they recorded 14 shots, four of which were on goal. Over roughly a four-minute span from the eighth to 13th minutes, Mercer unloaded six shots against ETSU goalkeeper Jonny Sutherland. Two shots were saved by Sutherland while three others were blocked during the barrage.
Entering the second half, the story flipped its script on Mercer. After 14 shots in the first half, the Bears only got one shot off in the final 45 minutes, which sailed high by Jordan Duru in the 71st minute. ETSU, which was held to three shots in the first half, had nine after halftime and broke the scoreless tie in the 82nd minute on Cameron Woodfin's goal off of a rebound.
For insurance, ETSU netted its second goal in the waning seconds (89th minute) off of Serge Gomis' foot. He was assisted by Woodfin on a pass into the box before putting it past Mercer's Jeremy Booth.
