Mercer Seeks Revenge Against Furman Tuesday
10/10/2016 12:10:00 PM | Men's Soccer
MACON, Ga. – The 2015 season ended in brutal fashion for Mercer at the hands of Furman, which eliminated the Bears in the Southern Conference Championship men's soccer semifinals on penalty kicks. It's unlikely the Bears have forgotten the feeling.
A chance to use those feelings as motivation will come Tuesday night, as Mercer (8-4-0, 3-1-0 SoCon) hosts Furman (5-4-2, 1-2-1) at 7 p.m. at Bear Field. Mercer sits atop the SoCon standings in a tie with Wofford, but owns the tiebreaker in the head-to-head matchup. Furman, meanwhile, is in fifth place with four total points.
The first 150 fans to arrive at Bear Field for the match will receive free Marble Slab ice cream and a slice of Papa John's pizza.

OFF TO THE RACES
If there is a motto for Mercer's aggressive play this season, it has been "strike quick." The Bears will surely look to maintain that up-tempo effort against Furman after notching two of the top-10 quickest goals by SoCon players this season in their last match at VMI.
Mercer owns five of the 10 fastest goals by SoCon players this year, including the top-3 by Will Bagrou (0:26, 1:30) and Conner Antley (1:32). The quickest goal Furman has allowed this season was to Gardner-Webb, which scored in the 18th minute.
SCOUTING FURMAN
The defending conference champion Paladins enter Tuesday's match with an 0-2-1 record in their past three matches, with losses to UNCG and Wofford and a draw against ETSU.
Furman was stunned by Wofford, 3-2, at home on Saturday night as the Terriers scored the game-tying and clinching goals with less than six minutes to play in regulation. Furman has had success this season though, earning wins over No. 15 Kentucky and Florida International, which was formerly nationally ranked. The team's lone SoCon win was a 6-0 victory at winless VMI.
Senior forward Lewis Hawke is tied with Mercer's Will Bagrou for the second most individual points (11) and goals (5) among SoCon players this season. Goalkeeper Jonathan Smith leads the conference with a .759 save percentage and has recorded four clean sheets in net.
SERIES HISTORY
Mercer and Furman own identical 4-4-2 records through 10 all-time matches. The Bears were defeated 1-0 and tied Furman 1-1 in the regular season last year before the Paladins eliminated them in the SoCon Championship semifinals.
