Mercer Swept, 3-0, by SoCon-leading ETSU
10/21/2016 8:59:00 PM | Volleyball
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – No volleyball team has traveled to J. Madison Brooks Gym this season and walked away victorious against ETSU. Mercer added to that storyline on Friday, as it was defeated by the Buccaneers in straight sets, 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 21-25), snapping a two-match win streak in Southern Conference play.
Â
ETSU (15-6, 7-2 SoCon) remained atop the conference standings and maintained its perfect 7-0 mark when playing on its home court at Brooks Gym. Meanwhile, the Bears dropped to 12-9 overall and 4-5 in the SoCon with seven matches remaining in the regular season.
Â
Mercer totaled a collective .100 hitting percentage and couldn't find its usual offensive identity against an ETSU defense that ranks second among SoCon teams in opponent hitting percentage. The Bears will get another shot at the Bucs in the regular season finale on Nov. 12 at Hawkins Arena.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (19-25) | After Mercer took three straight points to claim an 11-10 lead in the opening set, ETSU broke away with five consecutive points of its own and never looked back. The Bears committed a match-high seven attack errors in the set to allow ETSU to pull away, spoiling a strong offensive frame by Morgan MacGilvary with five kills on 11 total attacks.
Â
Set 2 (19-25) | Mercer owned the lead three times in the second set, but the latest one came at 8-7 early on before the Buccaneers once again pulled away. Defensive woes proved to be the case in the second frame as ETSU hit .333 with 16 kills, seven of which came from Briana Allmon, who finished with a match-high 18 kills. Mercer split the final 10 points with ETSU and added its lone ace of the match from Hannah Noon, but by then the deficit was too much to overcome.
Â
Set 3 (21-25) | The Bears couldn't rally from another large deficit in the final set despite winning nine of the last 13 points in the frame. Mercer received kills from Ellie James, Paige Alsten, Noon, Emily Krogman and Danielle Faust in the late push, but ETSU had all but sealed the match early on in the set with a seven-point run that put the Bucs up 14-9.
Â
NOTABLES
Mercer takes on Chattanooga (12-10, 5-4 SoCon) at Maclellan Gym in Chattanooga, Tennessee at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Mocs were pushed to the brink against The Citadel on Friday before defeating the Bulldogs in five sets. The Bears were ousted by Chattanooga in straight sets earlier this month for their lone loss of the season at Hawkins Arena.
