Mercer Rolls Over VMI, 5-0, on Senior Day
10/22/2016 10:21:00 PM | Men's Soccer
MACON, Ga. – Mercer dominated every level of the pitch en route to a 5-0 victory over VMI at Bear Field on Saturday, capping a memorable Senior Day for the Bears' four senior leaders.
Jordan Duru, Ian Antley, Max Poore and Nickolas Tripodi were all recognized prior to the match for their accomplishments as a group and as individuals during their four-year careers at Mercer. The ceremony was a fitting beginning to a night that was all Orange and Black as the Bears improved to 11-5-0 overall and 6-2-0 in the Southern Conference. Duru would go on to notch two assists in the match while Poore found the net for Mercer's third goal.
Mercer's win – complimented by a scoreless draw by ETSU and Furman – vaulted the Bears into first place in the SoCon standings with 18 points. The Buccaneers, who entered Saturday with sole possession of first, now sit in second with 17 points.
STAT OF THE MATCH
The Bears fired off 11 shots on goal on 24 total shots against the Keydets on Saturday, marking season-highs in both categories. Jordan Duru had a team-high four total shots while Will Bagrou and Cristian Medina each recorded three shots on goal.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Bagrou's offensive prowess was too much for the Keydets to handle as he led the way with a pair of goals for Mercer. The junior now has eight goals on the year and lead Mercer with 19 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Per usual, the Bears struck early on their home pitch when Jake Mezei netted his third goal of the year in the second minute of the match on an assist from Duru and Bagrou. After Bagrou found Duru along the right side of the box, the senior crossed it in for Mezei to finish for the opening goal.
Twelve minutes later, Mercer tacked on another when Bagrou rifled one from the top of the box after corralling a deflected shot by Roberto Arteaga moments earlier. The Bears would go on to add two more goals before halftime, as Poore scored his fourth goal of the year on a header after a feed into the box from Duru and Conner Antley. Mercer's youth joined the party shortly after when Cristian Medina beat a defender for his first collegiate goal just prior to halftime (44').
Bagrou would add his second score of the match in the 55th minute as he beat a pair of defenders into the box before putting it past the VMI goalkeeper for the final goal.
NOTABLES

"This way a very mature performance from our team, led by our four great seniors who have done a lot for this program," said head coach Brad Ruzzo. "I felt we had control from the start and did the all of the right things in each phase of the match."
