Bears Down The Citadel, 1-0, in Sunday Showdown
10/23/2016 5:21:00 PM | Women's Soccer
CHARLESTON, S.C. – In a departure from their recent games, the Mercer women's soccer team used a first-half goal to grab a 1-0 win over The Citadel on Sunday.
For the first time since Oct. 2, Mercer scored in the first half, this time off a goal from Katelyn Dimopoulos. The Bears held on to their 1-0 advantage for over 83 minutes and left Charleston with a win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the 7th minute of the match, Maddie Clark brought the ball down the left side of the field and sent a cross to Dimopoulos, just outside the goal. Dimopoulos beat the keeper and tapped the ball into the net to score her first goal of the season. The Bears were able to hold on to the 1-0 lead for a majority of the match as the defense recorded its fifth shutout in the last six matches.
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Katelyn Dimopoulos scored her first goal of the season and the game-winning score for the Bears.
STAT OF THE GAME
Cristina Mursuli made seven saves as the Bears' defense recorded its third SoCon shutout of the season.
NOTABLES
"It wasn't a pretty game from our standards today, but I was proud of the team for coming out on top with the result. We started off very strong and were able to capitalize and put one of the chances away. In the second half, credit to The Citadel for making things difficult for us, but we defended well and hung on for a 1-0 victory. It was an unbalanced weekend for us, not having a Friday game, so we were a little sluggish in the second half. Overall, I was happy that we could keep the winning streak going to six and hopefully give us some momentum going into the conference tournament." – Head Coach Tony Economopoulos.
RECORDS UPDATE
Mercer finished the season third in the SoCon and will host No. 6 Chattanooga in the second round of the SoCon Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. at Bear Field.
