Mercer Returns to SoCon Play Saturday at Wofford
10/27/2016 4:59:00 PM | Football
MACON, Ga. – Mercer has played some close games over the last two years – 11 out of the last 16 have been decided by one possession – but it doesn't get any closer than the overtime game against Wofford last year. Now the Bears have a chance to redeem themselves of that missed opportunity when Mercer plays at Wofford on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Wofford knows all about close losses as well. The Terriers (4-3, 2-2 SoCon) fell in overtime last weekend against No. 5 The Citadel, 24-21.
Mercer (4-3, 2-2) hopes to take advantage of more Terrier turnovers Saturday as the Bears enter the weekend ranked 13th nationally in turnover margin (+1.00/game) while Wofford ranks 43rd (+0.43/game).

Series History
The series between Mercer and Wofford and historically trends towards Mercer. The Bears held a 6-0 series lead when the school disbanded its football team following the 1941 season but Wofford has won both modern day meetings, including a 34-33 overtime win in Macon last year.
Two Winningest Active SoCon Coaches Square Off Saturday
When Mercer plays at Wofford on Saturday it will see the two winningest active football coaches in the Southern Conference meet on the same field. Wofford's Mike Ayers (145) and Mercer's Bobby Lamb (82) are not only the two winningest active coaches, they rank third and fourth, respectively, in career wins as members of the Southern Conference.

Bears Keep Non-Conference Winning Ways Going
Since reinstituting football in 2013, Mercer has found plenty of success. While the conference schedule – especially in the challenging Southern Conference – is a grind, Mercer has been successful overall and in non-conference play. With a 41-34 win over Austin Peay on Oct. 24, Mercer secured the program's fourth consecutive winning record in non-conference play.
Â
Block Party
It's a block party for Mercer's special teams. The Bears have recorded four blocked kicks this year, a mark that ranks tied for fourth in the country. Mercer's four blocked kicks – two punts, a field goal and a PAT – are matched with Bryant, Butler, Jackson State, Rhode Island and Stetson while Monmouth's eight blocked kicks leads the nation.
