Bears Down Terriers, 1-0, in Overtime
10/9/2016 4:58:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Bears needed extra time on Sunday to defeat the Terriers, but it only took the Mercer women's soccer team an extra 75 seconds before Maddie Clark sailed the ball into the back of the net to score and put Mercer over Wofford, 1-0.
Â
Mercer and Wofford played a fairly evenly matched game for all 90 minutes in regulation. The Terriers took 15 shots and the Bears took 11. Additionally, Mercer had five shots on goal and Wofford had four shots on goal. Each team had a couple of breakaway chances, but the defenses came up with stops.
Â
It was Mercer's lone shot in overtime that made the difference in the match, as Clark was finally able to send a shot into the goal and score.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After playing for a scoreless 90 minutes and sending the match to overtime, it looked poised to continue in the same fashion after each defense stifled an attempt by the other team's offense. When Corinne Wooten cleared a ball, Clark beat out a defender to get to the right place at the right time. After Clark got her foot on the ball, she dribbled down and took a clear shot at the goal, sending the ball to the lower left corner of the net.
Â
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
For the second straight match, Maddie Clark scored the only goal and handed the Bears a win. Clark also led Mercer with six shots on the day, including three shots on goal.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Wofford led in shots, 15-12, but Mercer owned an 8-3 shots advantage in the second half.
Â
NOTABLES
"I'm very proud of our team effort today. Going on the road and getting a win in the Southern Conference is difficult, no matter who you play; Wofford was a very tough team in the first half against us. I was proud of our girls for sticking with the game plan and really executing it to perfection in the second half and creating a lot of opportunities and chances. And we carried that momentum into overtime. Any time you can leave a weekend road trip with six points, it's a very good weekend. We hope to keep this momentum into the big three games we have next week."  – Head Coach Tony Economopoulos.
Â
RECORDS UPDATE
Mercer will return to Macon to host South Carolina State in the Bears' final non-conference match of the season. Mercer and SCSU will kick off at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Bear Field. The match will serve as Mercer's annual Pink Out match.
