Mercer Falls to ETSU, 3-1, in SoCon Tournament
11/4/2016 10:32:00 PM | Women's Soccer
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Bears came up short on Friday night in the Southern Conference Tournament semifinal match, as ETSU defeated the Mercer women's soccer team, 3-1.
Maddie Clark and Jamilah Tejan were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts in the match.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
ETSU tallied the first goal of the evening when Isabel Hodgson got the ball past Mercer's Cristina Mursuli on a second-chance shot in the 21st minute. The Bucs held on to their 1-0 advantage through halftime until Clark evened the score, 1-1, in the 56th minute. Haley McDuffee sent a long ball over the top and Clark caught up to it in time to play it past an ETSU defender and sail it into the goal.
Â
Mercer's second-half magic ran out about 15 minutes later when ETSU scored a pair of goals in just over five minutes to take a 3-1 lead with only 13 minutes remaining in the match. Each of the Bucs additional goals was off a second- or third-chance shot. Mercer tried to score again, but was unable to make it happen in the final minutes of the match.
Â
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Cristina Mursuli made a career-high 11 saves in her final match in goal for the Bears. Â
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
ETSU led Mercer in shots, 24-7, including a 14-2 shots on goal margin.
Â
NOTABLES
"I'm very proud of our team tonight, competing with the No. 2 seed ETSU. Credit to ETSU, they came out and had a great first half and got an early goal on us. I thought we came out in the second half with a renewed spirit after tweaking a few things. We pressed them and created some great chances and tied it up. At that time, I thought we had the momentum, we created a few more chances but unfortunately we couldn't put a second goal in the back of the net to give us the advantage. And then ETSU got a couple more goals to close out the game. I'm very proud of the nine seniors; the turnaround we had this year was phenomenal and all the returners will have some big shoes to fill moving forward." – Head Coach Tony Economopoulos.
