Mercer Withstands Davidson On Road, 67-60
12/29/2016 8:46:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Kahlia Lawrence records seventh career double-double in the win
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Kahlia Lawrence dropped a game-high 27 points and added 10 rebounds for her seventh career double-double as Mercer fought off Davidson for a 67-60 victory at the John M. Belk Arena on Thursday night.
Â
Mercer (10-3) used 15 steals to convert 23 points off turnovers as four Bears recorded three steals apiece. The win extended the Bears' best start under head coach Susie Gardner as they look ahead to closing out the year and their non-conference schedule against Paine at Hawkins Arena on Dec. 31.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer won the battle on the boards over the first two quarters of play, out-rebounding Davidson (2-10) 29-16 including 15 on the offensive end. The 29 total rebounds led to 11 second-chance points, helping the Bears overcome a five-minute, 51-second scoreless stretch in the first quarter.
Â
After a pair of free throws by Davidson's Ally Welling cut Mercer's lead to 26-24, the Bears scored the final nine points of the second quarter, including a three-pointer by Linnea Rosendal at the halftime buzzer. Lawrence nearly reached her double-double by halftime with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Â
A 23-point third quarter by the Wildcats made it a two-point contest heading into the fourth quarter. With one minute remaining in the game, Amanda Thompson drew a key offensive foul on Davidson's Justine Lyon to maintain Mercer's 63-58 lead and force the Wildcats to foul the rest of the way. Mercer connected on four free throws over the final minute to seal the victory.
Â
NOTABLES
"I'm pleased with the way we started tonight's game; we came out of the gates really hot. We didn't shoot the ball great, but we did have 15 offensive rebounds in the first half, which was the difference early on."
Â
"Kahlia [Lawrence] obviously had a great game scoring-wise and Amanda [Thompson] had a really big charge around the one-minute mark that sealed the game for us. We had talked with Kahlia about working on her offensive rebounding and she had four in the first half. I think when her shot isn't falling initially, she's able to go to the glass to get fouled."
Â
"We wanted to create some offensive with our defensive tonight. We did that against Davidson better than we've done in most, but we're just trying to fine-tune things to get ready for the most important part of our season [Southern Conference play], which is right around the corner."
