Bears Wrap Up Non-Conference Play With 93-50 Win Over Paine
12/31/2016 5:40:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MACON, Ga. – KeKe Calloway and Kahlia Lawrence led a quartet of double-digit scorers with 18 points apiece as the Mercer women's basketball team cruised past Paine, 93-50, on Saturday afternoon. The Bears closed out 2016 and the non-conference slate with a resounding win at Hawkins Arena.
Â
Sydni Means flirted with a double-double as she dished out a career-high 13 assists and added eight points. Alex Williams scored 11 points and Rachel Selph contributed 10 to round out the double-figure performances for Mercer.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer started a little slow, leading just 12-9 four minutes into the game, but picked it up and used a 10-0 run lasting 2:53 to stretch its lead to 22-9. The Bears and the Lady Lions traded baskets for the final two and a half minutes of the quarter as Mercer took a 29-13 lead at the end of the first period.
Â
The Bears dominated in the second period as well, outscoring the Lady Lions 20-8 in the first five minutes and stretching Mercer's advantage to 28 points, 49-21. After a Paine basket just under halfway through the quarter, Mercer used another 12-2 run to close out the first half and enter halftime with a 61-25 lead.
Â
Mercer maintained its large lead throughout the second half, even working its way to a 46-point lead, 88-42, with 4:05 remaining in the game. The Bears played without any starters on the floor for most of the second half, allowing all 15 players to enter the game. Fourteen of Mercer's 15 players scored as the Bears eventually defeated the Lady Lions, 93-50.
Â
NOTABLES
General thoughts on the game:
"I was pleased with the way we started the game; we shot the ball exceptionally well in the first half, which was important. We hadn't shot the ball well collectively in a while, so that was good. We really tried to create offense with our defense and obviously Sydni (Means) getting 13 assists and no turnovers is awesome for her."
Â
On closing out non-conference play with a big win:
"Our goal was to take these last couple of games, at Davidson and today, and try to be playing our best basketball going into conference play. Starting with ETSU and Chattanooga, those are the two teams that beat us last year and it's about to get harder. I'm pleased with our 11-3 start; I feel like we've grown; we're finally healthy. I'm so proud of the way we persevered through adversity, but it's about to get tougher. I think we're ready for the challenge."
